What are the Possible Side Effects of Dental Fillings?

    By Danny | Dental Knowledge | Comments are Closed | 14 February, 2020 | 1

Dental fillings are a dental treatment used to fill in damaged teeth because of decay and cavities. If you develop some cavities, your dentist may remove some portions of your affected teeth. After it was removed, dental materials are placed to fill in the empty area to maintain your teeth’s structural integrity.

However, tooth sensitivity and other possible risks after placing a filling are possible to happen. A tooth that has undergone dental filling is sensitive to pressure, air, sweet foods, or temperature. Typically, this sensitivity heals on its own within several weeks.

    What are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings or also called teeth restoration filling is a common dental treatment to resolve cavities. It particularly treats those areas of a decaying tooth with small holes. It is called dental restoration as it restores the integrity, structure and function of your damaged tooth. It is usually supported by dental implants. The tooth fillings procedure is both ideal and efficient because you can finish this treatment in one dentist’s appointment. It is also relatively affordable, has lots of benefits but also has a few side effects.

During the filling procedure, your dentist fills the holes in your teeth with either an amalgam or composite substance. This treatment is a simple procedure, however, it still gives many patients with sensitive teeth after the session.

    How Do Teeth Filling Work?

The dental filling treatment is composed of two stages. In the first stage, your dentist cleans out the infected or decayed tooth, removing all the signs of decay and cavities. In the second stage, your dentist bonds the filling material to the targeted tooth to give it additional support.

You can also choose what filling you want. You can choose a tooth-coloured composite or a silver amalgam filling during the treatment. If you want affordable fillings, choose Silver amalgam fillings. It has been used for years, and it can last longer than composite fillings.

Some of the Possible Side Effects of Dental Fillings

There are several side effects of dental restoration.

Constant throbbing toothache. If the ache comes from the decay in the inner pulp of the tooth, this may indicate weak tissue. In this case, you are required to get a root canal treatment.

Hot or cold sensitivity. This pain is considered a sharp pain, it only occurs when your treated teeth touch something hot or cold. Worry not because the pain goes away in a few seconds when removed in hot or cold food. However, if this pain takes a long time to disappear, it may indicate damage to the nerve. You should contact your dentist, right away.

Pain when you biting food or touching your teeth together. This type of pain happens when you chew your food or touch your teeth together. As soon as the anesthesia has worn off, the pain will occur and will continue over time. If you notice that the filling is interfering with your bite, return to your dentist and have it reshaped. Whereas, if the pain still continues, consider contacting your dentist as well as it may indicate further dental problems. Your dentist may require you to have an additional treatment like root canal therapy.

Pain in the neighbouring teeth. Some patients experience sensitivity in their other teeth next to the one that received the filling. If you also experience this, there is nothing to worry about because it is a normal and common pain. The tooth with filling is just passing the pain signals it has to other teeth. This sensitivity decrease on its own after one or two weeks.

Allergic reaction. Another cause of your pain, after a tooth filling, is your allergy. Maybe you are allergic to the materials used in the filling. You might also observe some rashes or itchiness nearby. If you think filling materials trigger your allergy, contact your dentist immediately. Remember that they can redo the filling using different filling materials.

If you ever experience one of the things mentioned above, kindly contact your dentist. If your tooth is extremely in pain and does not stop within 2 to 4 weeks, visit your dentist. Your dentist may recommend you to apply a desensitizing toothpaste to the affected tooth. It is also possible for you to get a root canal procedure.

Benefits of Getting Teeth Restoration Fillings

A dental restoration treatment also offers multiple benefits, it includes the following:

    • Quick procedure: If you only have one decayed tooth, the fillings treatment can only take as little as one hour.
    • Affordable Cost: The treatment is typically inexpensive and sometimes covered by dental insurance.
    • Long-lasting effect: Tooth-colored fillings can last about five to seven years. Silver fillings last about 12 years.
    • Appearance: Dental filling restorations produce a natural appearance.
